Candy’s Guide to New York City

I’ve always loved New York City but have never lived there—until now!  I’m thrilled to be buying a condo in Manhattan, and you can watch me navigate the NYC real estate scene in this Sunday’s episode of “Beyond Spelling Manor” on HGTV.

Even though I’m new to bicoastal living, I’ve spent enough time in this amazing city to have some insider tips to share with travelers. These are my favorite NYC experiences:

Favorite Hotels: The Lowell and the St. Regis

Best Restaurants: Park Avenue (it transforms its menu and decor with the seasons!) and The Lion, a chic East Village spot that does inventive takes on beloved classics. I also love Amaranth on the Upper East Side for Mediterranean food.

Best Spots for a Quick Bite: Burke in the Box at Bloomingdale’s is great place to regroup while shopping, Eats has lots of delicious options and the Viand Coffee Shop on Madison is a timeless classic.

Best Deli: Zabar’s is my go-to for smoked fish, deli meats, pickles and other so-New York delicacies.

Best Frozen Yogurt: Forty Carrots—it’s on the 7th floor of Bloomingdale’s but is so worth the elevator ride.

Best Hot Dogs: Papaya King, although it seems like every corner has a stand selling delicious hot dogs

Best Pizza: Joe’s on Carmine Street in the Village and Lombardi’s in Nolita

Top Dog-Walking Spot: Central Park of course!

For the Kids: I love seeing the smiles on my grandkids’ faces when I take them to Seredipity or Dylan’s Candy Bar for something sweet.

Favorite Neighborhood to Get Lost In: Madison Avenue from the 50s to the 80s

Must-See Broadway Shows Right Now: Matilda and Annie

Best Spots for a Cocktail: You can’t go wrong with the Four Seasons or Le Cirque.

Where to Go for a Bite Post-Theater: Orso (great for late-night star spotting!)

My Favorite Art Galleries: The Spanierman Gallery and the Gagosian Gallery

Transportation Tip: If you’re in a pinch, try Uber, an app that can get you a car service when taxis are scarce (remember that 4 pm is when cab drivers change shifts, so it can be hard to find one then).

Best View of the City Skyline: My new apartment!
