To me, one is almost never enough of, well, anything! So I certainly couldn’t stop at one book, and my second memoir will be released next week – on May 6th to be exact. I had so much fun writing Stories from Candyland that I couldn’t resist doing another. Over the past couple of years, I feel as if I’ve grown and evolved quite a bit and finally come into my own as Candy Spelling, the independent woman, not just the woman behind Aaron Spelling. Because of this, I wanted to write a more open and uncensored memoir that reflects where I am now.
The result: Candy At Last, almost three hundred pages of intimate details about my past and present. I tried to keep it entertaining by including lots of dishy tidbits about Hollywood stars and power players who I knew during my marriage to Aaron—Dean Martin, Joan Collins, Liz Taylor, and Michael Jackson all make appearances as you’ve never seen them before.
But the book also lays bare aspects of my life that were more difficult to write about: My often-unhappy childhood, my famously complex relationship with my daughter Tori, the loss of my beloved husband, and my misadventures in the world of sex and dating after many decades of marriage (just for starters). Although it wasn’t easy, I was inspired to be very frank about those challenges by the many women who reached out to me over the years since Aaron passed. I’ve heard from so many widows and other women trying to chart new courses in their lives, asking me for advice or telling me that something I said resonated with them. So it is my hope that this book will inspire women to find their authentic voice and discover who they are, no matter what age they are or where they are in life. It is never too late – or too early.
It felt very liberating to be so honest in this book. After a youth where I was expected to be the polite, never-speaks-until-spoken-to daughter, and decades comfortably in the shadow of my fantastically successful husband, it’s scary to speak up . . . but it feels good! If you do read the book, please let me know what you think!
