My Best Tips to Grow and Care For Roses

As many of you know, I love flowers — especially roses. They come in all different sizes and As many of you know, I love flowers — especially roses. They come in all different sizes and colors and no two roses are ever the same. Even with such a wide variety, the methods for growing and caring for these beautiful flowers are very similar. I thought I would share some tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years in case they might be helpful to any of you.

1. Roses need lots of sunlight — at least six hours a day. When deciding where to plant your rose bush, think about the places in your yard or around your home that get plenty of sun. I personally like to plant my rose bushes near a walkway.

2. Like many of us, roses like their personal space . If you crowd too many rose bushes together, some plants may begin to die. This is because rose bushes need to have lots of air circulation in their roots.

3. Before you begin planting your rose bush, make sure to put on thick gloves to protect your hands from the prickly thorns. Also have a hose or bucket of water and all your planting tools nearby.

4. First step in planting: make sure to dig a hole much larger than you think you need. This way you can add some fertilizer, like compost, which will help the plant grow bigger and fuller.

5. Once your rose bush is in the ground, make sure water it regularly. You need to soak the plant, roots and all, at least twice a week. Never let your rose bush completely dry out. Be careful not to overwater though, as roses don’t like to sit in the water, and they’ll die if the soil is too wet in winter.

6. Mulch is a great material that helps conserve water, reduce stress, and encourage healthy growth.

7. Make sure to not cut back or move roses in summer, as they might suffer and die in the heat.

8. If part of your plant is dying, make sure to cut that piece off from the rest of the healthy plant. Leaving the dead or diseased plant can result in the loss of the entire plant.

9. When the Fall season comes around, stop fertilizing 6 weeks before the first fall frost but continue watering during dry fall weather to help keep plants healthy during a dry winter.

10. As the weather gets colder, clean up the rose beds to prevent overwintering of diseases. One last spray for fungus with a dormant spray is a good idea to ensure that the rose bush comes back in the spring.
